The Wildest First Memory I've Collected

You asked. Here is my video reply.

“What’s your favorite first memory that you’ve collected?”

My answer:

Everyone in Colombia has a nanny. My nanny was awful to me and my younger brother. She used to drag us around by an arm, or smack us around. When another adult came in the room, she acted completely different — sweet and caring. It was a very strange switch and hard for me to understand. But, the first thing I remember is sitting at the kitchen table with the robbers.

“Can we get you a sandwich?“ they asked. They brought the nanny — rolled up in a carpet — into the kitchen and dropped her on the floor.

“Who is this?” they asked.

“That’s our nanny.”

“Well, do you like your nanny?”

“No, she is really mean to us.”

“Would you like to kick her?”

My first memory is me and my brother kicking the nanny, rolled up in the carpet. It was very cathartic. The robbers gave us that; they took everything else.

Whoa - that’s a lot to take in! Thanks for being here so we can all process that together.

[Deep breath.]
